Welcome Cook Families!

On behalf of the entire staff, I hope that you have enjoyed a restful and relaxing summer!   Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Frederic W. Cook Elementary School! We are excited to have our students and staff return for another year of teaching and learning. This year we will continue to focus on strengthening our academic programs, particularly in the areas of mathematics instruction.  We will also be supplementing our math curriculum with Eureka Math.  This researched based program, is aligned to the New Jersey State Learning Standards and have yielded positive learning outcomes across the state and country.  We have also included a math coach this year to provide job embedded coaching and professional development for all teachers.

Our technology program has also been upgraded. All students will have access to IPADS for use throughout the school day.  Classroom libraries will also be upgraded to ensure that students have access to an abundance of high quality literature for classroom and independent reading.

We are continuously strengthening our arts program.  On the horizon is a fourth and fifth grade jazz band, a drumline, as well as our annual musical.  Students from Cook will also continue to develop their tennis and STEM skills through our partnership with the Netherwood Tennis Club, The Mike Goor Foundation and the National Tennis Association (NTA).

We continue to be grateful for the strong partnerships with our families, the PTO and our community. We are also very proud of our students and staff and look forward to the new school year. Together we will work to ensure that every student has a great year at Frederic W. Cook Elementary School!

Below please find some important notes and reminders about the start of the school year.  Thank you in advance for your attention to the many details.

  • Morning Procedures: Doors open for breakfast at 7:30 AM, school begins at 8:00 AM.  In order to ensure a productive start to the day and maximize learning time, please ensure that students arrive by 8:00 AM.  Students are considered late after 8:10 AM.
    • Students in Grades K through 5 will report directly to the cafeteria where students will be greeted by their classroom teachers each day. Students will be served breakfast upon their arrival.  We ask that all students who plan to eat breakfast arrive at 7:30 AM.  Breakfast will be served until 8:00 AM.  
    • Late students: Students in all grades who arrive after 8:10 AM will receive a late pass and be marked late by their homeroom teacher.  Please remember that instruction begins promptly at 8:10 AM.  When students are late, they miss valuable instruction and disrupt the learning environment.   
  • Afternoon Procedures: School is dismissed at 2:35 PM each day, with periodic 12:10 PM early dismissal.  
    • Students who are picked up will meet their families in front of the school. We ask that all parents notify their child’s teacher or the main office pick-up procedures change.  The person picking up your child must be on the pick-up list.
    • Students who take the bus will meet in the bus room and wait for their bus to arrive.  The designated staff person will escort students to their bus.
    • Students who attend After School Programs  will be dismissed to their programs
  • First Day of School: The first day of school is Thursday, September 6th, beginning at 8:00 a.m.  When you arrive on September 5th, please meet in front of the school for our annual Opening Ceremony.  Each teacher will have a sign identifying their grade and homeroom.  We invite parents and guardians to join us in front of the school for our opening day ceremony.  After the ceremony, teachers will take their classes to the classroom.  After students are dismissed, please join the PTO for refreshments, collaboration and committee sign-ups.
  • Meet & Greet/Ice Cream Social: Please join us for our annual Ice Cream Social on Thursday, August 29th from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM.  There will be water refreshments, ice cream, as well as games and face painting for the students to enjoy.  This event will be co-hosted by the PTO.  Parents will have an opportunity to tour the school, classrooms and trailers.


  • Back-to-School Night: Come learn about the curriculum and programs available to your families.
    • Tuesday, September 24th: Back to School Night  6:30 to 8:30 PM
  • School Supplies: Please ensure students are equipped with the following items:

(see enclosure)  Teachers may provide additional items on the first day of school.

  • Fundraisers: Fundraising activities are critical to the success of our school.  We will begin the year with our popcorn fundraiser.  We would like 100% participation.  Funds raised are used to enhance programming at Cook School. If you are unable to participate in fundraisers, consider making a donation of any size.
  • Cookies, Coffee & Conversations with the Principal There will be several small informal meetings throughout the school year.  These will be open conversations on a range of topics for parents. Come to one or come to all!  The first one will take place on October 3rd  at 9:00 AM.
  • PTO We have a very small but dedicated group of parents.  Please consider being a part of this team.
  • Uniform: Dress code will be strictly enforced this year and we appreciate your attention to your child’s clothing before you send him/her to school.  Our colors are burgundy/white shirts and khaki pants/skirts.
  • Free Breakfast and Free/Reduced/Paid Lunch Program: Breakfast and lunch are provided by Maschio’s Food Services and are available to all students.  Breakfast is free of charge for ALL students. A menu will be distributed at the beginning of every month.  Please be sure to complete the free and reduced lunch application online.
  • Communications: Our primary means of communication will be through global phone messages and email.  Please ensure that your phone numbers and emails are current, including back-up numbers.
  • Parental Involvement: We are always looking for ways to involve are parents.  If you have a special talent or skill, We Need You!  Feel free to share your special talents with your child’s teacher or me
  • Class/Homeroom Assignments: Teacher assignments have been included in this mailing.  A considerable amount of thought went into each assignment.  In order to ensure balance in each classroom, changes in classroom assignments will only be made in critical situations.  Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be departmentalized.

The purpose of this document is so parents can assist us in ensuring success for students in their upcoming grade.  The below skills do not cover everything that students will learn next year. The skills listed are skills that we would like students to be comfortable with at their respective grades.  At the upper grade levels (3-5) it is critical that students are able to add, subtract and multiply basic facts from memory.


Skills expected by the end of Kindergarten

  • Counting and matching numbers 1-20
  • Comparing numbers 0-10
  • Counting to 100
  • Fluency with addition and subtraction 1-5

New to 1st Grade

  • Fluency with addition and subtraction with two digit numbers up to 10

Examples: 6+3 = 9    5+4=9 7

  • Knowing their double facts  (3+3, 6+6 etc)

New to 2nd Grade

  • Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

 Examples: 14-7= 7     9+6=15 8+4 =12 13-5= 8   12+7 = 19 9-5= 4

New to  3rd Grade

  • Fluency with addition and subtraction  up to 20

 Examples: 14-7= 7     9+6=15 8+4 =12 13-5= 8   12+7 = 19 9-5= 4

  • Multiplication facts up to 10
  • Multiplication/Division - two digit numbers

New to 4th Grade

  • Fluently add and subtract within 20. Students should know from memory all sums and differences within 20 
  • Fluently multiply and divide 

Students should know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers and the related quotient. 
Examples: 6x7= 42       42/7= 6     12 x 12 =144    144/12= 12

  • (2) developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers

New to 5th Grade

  • Fluently add and subtract within 20. Students should know from memory all sums and differences within 20 
  • Fluently multiply and divide 

Students should know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers and the related quotient. 
Examples: 6x7= 42       42/7= 6     12 x 12 =144    144/12= 12

  • Long division
  • Addition of fractions with like and unlike denominators

English Language Arts

Students should read a variety of books, including non-fiction.  Students should be able to summarize the story, which includes naming the characters, problem and setting.

As children are reading or as you are reading to your children, be sure to ask about how the character is feeling, how the character has changed and other key details about the story.  Students should be able to make predictions about what might happen in the story.

In non-fiction books, students should be able to name key details and tell what the text was mostly about.
